The National Institute of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies (INER) has been the pioneer in the promotion of the Life Cycle Approach in Ecuador. The institute has started the first project “Evaluation of Electricity´s Life Cycle produced in Ecuador”, and it has incorporated transversely the Life Cycle Approach as a tool to evaluate its variety of research subjects.

Under this project, the institute’s team has worked in conjunction with the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL). It has organized the first event to promote Life Cycle Approach in the country, which was held on September 10th – 11th, 2013 at the Gustavo Galindo´s Campus ESPOL (Guayaquil) - School of Mechanical Engineering and Production Sciences´ Auditorium. The event consisted of a conference on the evaluation of electricity´s life cycle and technical consulting conducted by Nydia Suppen PhD. The event had the participation of 40 assistants among whom where well prestige professionals from the electrical and energetic sector, along with professors and scientists from ESPOL. All of them related to the study of energy systems and sustainability.

Afterwards, another event was organized from November 25 – 29th, 2013 under the Training Program in the energy area promoted by the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energies and the Galapagos Province – Electrical Company, with the support of the Germany Cooperation for Development – GIZ. This event was held in Portoviejo´s City (Manabí). The event was a workshop – seminar named: “Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) related to biomass energy”. The event was conducted by Nydia Suppen PhD., Barbara Civit PhD., and the valuable participation of Beatriz Rivela PhD. as a representative from the institute (INER). The established objectives in this event have helped promoting a general vision about Life Cycle. The Life Cycle Assessment´s methodology has been analyzed and applied to specific cases related to biomass energy.

These two important events have generated acceptance among the participants, who expressed their interest in the corresponding chatting sessions after the events concluded. Also, they stated the necessity to promote the application of Life Cycle Approach in the Ecuadorian context. The requirements to generate knowledge thru specific projects to incorporate this approach, and use the expected results of the research to help decision makers at the national political level analyze the proposals. Given the institute’s experience in the organization of these two events, and due to the necessity that has been identified, the INER´s team is willing to coordinate the establishment of the Ecuadorian Life Cycle Assessment Network.

Space provided to promote the exchange of knowledge in the areas of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
